Exploring Diu by Road

Diu is a small island town off the southern coast of Saurashtra. Once a Portuguese territory and now part of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, it has a pace of its own — sea-facing ramparts, whitewashed churches and long, quiet beaches.
Getting there
Diu is reached by road through Una in Gir Somnath district, crossing on to the island by bridge. The drive from Ahmedabad takes you through the farmland and small towns of Saurashtra, with plenty of places to pause on the way.
Because Diu is a Union Territory rather than part of Gujarat, some local rules differ from those in Gujarat. It is worth checking them before you travel.
What to see
- Diu Fort, the sixteenth-century Portuguese fortress guarding the channel.
- Panikota, the small sea fort that appears to float off the shore.
- St. Paul’s Church, with its carved baroque façade.
- Naida Caves, a maze of sunlit hollows cut into the rock.
- Nagoa and Ghoghla beaches for a slower afternoon.
- Gangeshwar Mahadev at Fudam, where the sea washes over the lingas.
How long to stay
The main sights are close together and can be seen in a full day, but Diu is at its best with a night or two to enjoy the sunsets and the quieter beaches.
Diu pairs naturally with Somnath and the Gir forest. A three- or four-day circuit lets you see all three without long days on the road.
Booking your cab
Choose a round trip if you would like the same car available on the island and for the return journey. Let us know whether you plan to add Somnath or Gir so the itinerary can be shared with you before you travel.
Timings, rules and access arrangements at temples, monuments and parks change from time to time — please check them locally before you travel.
